SugarHouse Casino Fourth In Line For PA Sports Betting License
The SugarHouse Casino in Philadelphia has now joined the growing list of casinos looking to offer legal sports betting in Pennsylvania. On Wednesday, SugarHouse submitted an application for licensure to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB).
A Number Of Potential PA Sportsbooks
SugarHouse Casino is the most recent Pennsylvania gaming establishment to petition for licensure, but they are not the first. There have been three other operators to formally submit their requests to accept sports wagers, though there are a total of 12 casinos and one potential stadium casino that are authorized to allow legal PA sports betting.
The following casinos have already petitioned the Board:
- Parx Casino
- Hollywood Casino
- Harrah’s Philadelphia
Though all of the casinos are located in the Philly area, SugarHouse is in a unique position as it is the only venue located within the Philadelphia city limits. With Philadelphia home to the Philadelphia Flyers, Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Temple Owls, SugarHouse would benefit from local fans and visitors attending nearby sporting events.
When Will Legal PA Sports Betting Go Live?
The casino sportsbook applications for Parx and Hollywood will be heard at the upcoming PGCB meeting which will take place next Wednesday. Harrah’s and SugarHouse did not submit their requests in time to make next week’s agenda, however, the applications will likely be included on the Wednesday, October 31st itinerary.
If and when applicants are approved by the Board, operators must pay a $10 million licensing fee before starting to accept sports bets at their facilities. Regulations also stipulate a 90 day waiting period before operators can launch sports betting, though exceptions are likely to be made.
All signs point to legal Pennsylvania sports betting becoming a reality no later than January, just in time for NFL fans to bet on the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs.
